I have a makeup brush obsession. I have a lot of makeup brushes. Like A LOT. One time I spent 2 hours inside the Morphe store. Making sure I bought a brush for every single step in my makeup application process. I did a TON of research prior to entering the store. What do you need for contouring?, concealer?, eyeliner??, etc. And makeup brushes are not cheap. So if I’m going to spend all this money on makeup brushes, I want to take care of them! In this post I will be sharing 6 products that will maintain your makeup brushes and keep them in perfect condition.
Great makeup application begins with a clean brush.
It is recommended to wash your brushes after every use to prevent the dirt build-up from causing acne. To be honest, I only wash mine every 1 1/2 weeks because I don’t wear makeup everyday. However, if you start noticing more breakouts I would recommend every washing your brushes more often. It is recommended to get new brushes every 1 to 5 years. This number can vary depending on the quality and how well you maintain your makeup brushes.
Make sure you read this section if you want to know the 6 products that will maintain your makeup brushes and make them last longer.
Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Mat
Prior to purchasing this mat, I washed my brushes with brush shampoo and my hands. It was a pain. This mat completely changed the brush washing game for me. It has different textures that work against your brush to remove makeup, oil and dirt. I use it with EcoTools Makeup Brush Shampoo, which I talk about below. You simply suction cup the mat into your sink and swirl your brush around. After one use, my brushes were ten times cleaner than they’ve ever been. When drying your makeup brushes make sure to lay them flat, not straight up, so the moisture doesn’t seep into the brush handle.
EcoTools Makeup Brush Shampoo
I recommend using makeup brush shampoo to thoroughly clean your brushes. I really love this shampoo by EcoTools because it removes more than 90% of makeup from your brushes. This shampoo is hypoallergenic and made with gentle plant-based ingredients so it won’t irritate your skin. You only need to squeeze a little bit onto each brush, so this bottle will last you for a long time! As mentioned above for when drying your makeup brushes: squeeze dry, reshape bristles, lay them flat (not straight up) so the moisture doesn’t seep into the brush handle.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Daily Brush Cleaner
If you’re like the rest of us then you probably don’t have time to wash your brushes after every use. The e.l.f. Cosmetics Daily Brush Cleaner is perfect for quick cleanings in between makeup applications, so you can have a fresh brush to apply your makeup with. This brush cleaner is also cruelty free and vegan!
InterDesign Brush Caddy
I have several brush caddies in my bathroom that I like to use to store my makeup and brushes. They keep my counter organized. Instead of throwing your brushers in a drawer and destroying the bristles, storing them upright will make them last longer.
Cosmetic Case
I store my brushes in a cosmetic case whenever I travel. You probably already know why… (to prevent the bristles from losing their shape). If you don’t already have makeup brushes, you can purchase a case that comes with them. It’s a win-win situation.
Beauty Blender Drying Rack

Now that you know my secrets to maintaining your makeup brushes and keeping them in great condition, you can make your makeup brushes last longer! This also means you will have more money to spend… on more makeup, of course.
