I’m usually not one to go online and leave a bad review for a product because quite frankly, I don’t care enough. I’ll just make a mental note to never purchase anything from that brand again. But I felt like I needed to discuss the lip balm that lit.er.ally burned my lips.
I’ve always used lip balms…. which I hate because I honestly believe they are addicting, but since I’ve used them for so long, my lips are used to it. I also believe that companies purposely make them dry your lips out so you have to buy more. How else would they stay in business? So naturally I’m standing in line at Whole Foods and look over to see this lip balm in cute, purple packaging. I know, good packaging is a shopaholic’s recipe for disaster.
^ My lip’s worst enemy.
I usually use Burt’s Bees, but decided to try something new. So I’m using this Alba Botanica Un-Petroleum SPF 18 Vanilla Lip Balm. I’m like it must be legit, the name itself is fancy af. But slowly, I started noticing that within five minutes of using it, my lips were already dry again. After about three days of usage, I woke up one morning because my lips were on FIRE. I literally ran to the mirror to make sure they were still on my face. Thankfully they were, but they were also blistered, burnt and cracked. And it only got worse over time.
The problem was an ingredient that lip balm companies use called petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly closes your pores so that water cannot get in or out. Long story short, it’s actually suffocating your lips instead of moisturizing them.. Interesting.
I immediately threw away any lip balm with petroleum jelly and/or petrolatum listed as an ingredient. I went to Sephora and purchased Ultra Repair Lip Therapy by First Aid Beauty. It contains natural ingredients that soothed, moisturized and nourished my skin. #Blessed.
^ My lip’s new best friend.
It’s been about two weeks and my lips are still healing from the “cute, purple lipstick.” I’ve read reviews online about a lot of people having the same issue with this company. This is a PLBBA (Public Lip Balm Beauty Announcement), that you shouldn’t used any beauty product with petroleum jelly and/or petrolatum listed as an ingredient. Especially when there are better options. Moisture is key.
